Retailing in India is one of the main pillars of its economy and it accounts for 14 to 15 % of it’s GDP and keeps growing considering the "Demographic Dividend" with 1.2 Billion people and estimated revenue generation of US$ 500 Billion.

 Indian Retail market is emerging from Owner manned small shops to multi level and multi branding convenience stores to Mega Malls.

As of now, India's retail and logistics industry employs 40 million people (3.3% of Indian population). After the inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and entering of the retail giants like Wal-Mart, Carrefour, and TESCO, who are in the process of setting up their operations in India. The local players like Future Group, Mahindra Group, Reliance Industries, TATA  and Aditya Birla Group  have already thrown open the employment opportunities for the professionally trained skilled manpower in Sales/marketing and logistics. The economists forecast that the Indian retail industry will nearly double in Economic value.

Considering the above facts the Government of India under the aegis of National Skill Development Corporation through RASCI (Retailers Association Skill Council of INDIA) are engaging the private players to train the manpower on National Occupational Standards (NOS) for 4 roles created (Store Operations Assistant, Cashier, Trainee Associate, Sales Associate) which accounts for more than 80% of the direct employability in the Indian Retail Sector and has been cleared through the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) Qualification Registration Committee (QRC).

RASCI is the only Skill Council in India to have created the NOS ‘by the industry’, ‘for the industry’.

RASCI received 46 industry endorsements against the NSDC criteria of 30 endorsements.

RASCI NOS has been viewed by more than 750 large, medium and small retailers in Public View Mode before being declared National Standard.
